The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITG-ITM)

The Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine: groundbreaking research on tropical medicine, AIDS and public health.

The Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine (ITM) is one of the world's leading institutions for education and research of tropical medicine (including AIDS), tropical medical services and health care development in developing countries.

At ITM, 400 scientist and technical personnel work in 5 scientific departments and specialized medical units. Yearly, an average of 400 medical doctors, veterinarians and biomedical personnel follow advanced courses; over 80 young researchers are completing their PhD.

When it comes to research output, the ITM is the only Belgian institution listed in the European academic top-15. ITM also carries out an extensive capacity strengthening programme in developing countries, and is part of a network of 23 partners in Africa, South America and Asia.

Yearly, the medical services handle over 30.000 consultations. ITM is subsidized by the ministries of education, research, development cooperation and public health, but is largely dependent on project financing, own revenue and donations.
